Amaranth – Grand Valley – East Garafraxa Joint Police Service Board

Amaranth Public Representative - Volunteer

Purpose:  The purpose of the Police Services Board is to establish priorities, objectives and policies regarding the policing in the Township of Amaranth, Township of East Garafraxa and the Town of Grand Valley in consultation with the Detachment Commander of the OPP and Council.

The joint Board consists of one Council Member and one public member from each of the three municipalities and one ministerial appointee. The Board will meet four times per calendar year. The new Board could decide later if they wish to meet more frequently; however, they are obligated under the CSPA to meet at least quarterly.

The Police Services Board is responsible:  

·         To adopt a by-law to govern the proceedings of the Joint Police Services Board, the conduct, duties and responsibilities of its members and the calling of meetings

·         To determine a four-year strategic plan as a key component in the development of annual operating or business plans including surveying ratepayers, evaluating the Boards performance and monitoring the changing needs and demographics of the Municipality

·         To determine priorities and objectives for police services within the community through consultation with the Detachment Commander, Council, Municipal Staff, police officers assigned to the community, as well as the public

·         To participate in the selection of a Detachment Commander

·         To advise the Detachment Commander with respect to polices services provided

·         To monitor the performance of the Detachment Commander

Eligibility for appointment:  Anyone interested in serving must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian Citizen, a resident of the Township and not employed by the Board or the Municipality. The term of the members will be from November 2024 through November 2026. Formal education in the field is not necessary and is open to any resident of the Township. There will be a Criminal Record Check and Mandatory Training required to participate on the Joint Board.

Board Composition: 

(1) Appointed members of Council from each Municipality, (1) Appointed Provincial Representative, (1) Appointed Public Representative from each Municipality

Selection Process:  All applicants for appointment to the Board must submit an application by email to nmartin@amaranth.ca by November 13th, 2024. Applications will be reviewed and qualified candidates will be selected and appointed by Amaranth Council on December November 20th, 2024. Criminal Record Check and Mandatory training must be completed by the first meeting in 2025. Remuneration for this Board position will be $80.00 per meeting.
