GRCA Watershed Conditions Statement - Water Safety

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety

The Grand River watershed continues to recover following recent rainfall and snow melt events over the past few weeks.

As a result, rivers and streams throughout the watershed are flowing much faster and higher than normal for this time of year. Moderate rainfall is forecast overnight Friday into Saturday but is not expected to cause flooding. While river levels are expected to recede through the coming week, recreational river users such as anglers, canoeists and kayakers should be aware of the elevated flows across the watershed. Water temperatures also remain just a few degrees above zero, increasing the risk of hypothermia to anyone who may fall in.

Reservoir Storage

The Grand River Conservation Authority’s major reservoirs are at, or slightly above, normal operating levels for this time of year. These reservoirs have been used to moderate flows during recent weather events, reducing the impact of downstream flooding. Those reservoirs operating above normal operating levels will be brought back down over the coming week.

Stay Safe

Banks adjacent to rivers and streams are slippery and, when combined with fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from watercourses.

GRCA staff will continue to monitor conditions and will update this message as necessary. This message will remain in effect until Monday, April 30th.
