GRCA - Flood Termination - Watershed Safety Message

Flood Message #6: Flood Termination - Watershed Safety Message

The Grand River Conservation Authority is issuing the following Flood Termination message. All Flood Warnings and Watches issued between February 4th and February 8th are now terminated.

The weather system that passed through the watershed over the weekend has returned temperatures below freezing. These temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing through the rest of this week. River flows in the northern, central and southern portions of the Grand River watershed have returned to more seasonal conditions for this time of year. With reduced flows, the potential for flooding and movement of ice jams has diminished.

The Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker, CCGS Griffon, arrived at the mouth of the Grand River in Port Maitland on Saturday February 11th and completed ice breaking operations which has helped reduce the risk of ice jam flooding in this area.

GRCA’s major reservoirs at Belwood, Conestogo, Guelph, Luther, Woolwich, Laurel, and Shade’s Mills continue to be used to manage runoff and reduce the potential for frazil ice generation.

Municipal flood co-ordinators will be receiving a test message from the GRCA on February 12th as part of our annual flood notification system test. This test message is not related to the recent weather events over the past week.

Stay Safe

The public is reminded to exercise extreme caution around all water bodies. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery at this time and, when combined with current weather conditions, pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses and off frozen water bodies, which will be weakened as a result of the warming trend.
