GRCA Flood Message #3 - Combined Flood Warning/Flood Watch

Date and Time Issued: Friday, February 18, 2022 at 4:30 p.m.
The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is issuing the following combined Flood Warning/Flood Watch message. This message replaces GRCA Flood Message #2, previously in effect.
The weather affecting much of the province over the past 48 hours has moved out of the Grand River watershed, and temperatures have returned below freezing. As a result, river flows are receding but will remain high through the weekend. Ice jams remain a concern on most local waterways throughout the watershed.
A Flood Warning is being issued for:
• Grand River (Haldimand County): Municipal Flood Coordinators in Haldimand County have been advised to close Ouse Street in Cayuga due to an ice jam in the area, warn affected residents and continue monitoring conditions.
A Flood Warning is being terminated for:
• Speed River (Cambridge)
Flood Watch remains in effect for all other areas of the Grand River watershed due to the potential for ice movement and continued risk of ice jams. Conditions will be monitored closely and updates will be issued as necessary. Municipal Flood Coordinators in Flood Watch areas are asked to remain prepared for the possibility of flooding due to ice jams.
Most local waterways remain ice covered following this event, however, ice on local waterbodies has been significantly weakened during this event, resulting in extremely unsafe conditions. The public is asked to stay off all unmonitored water bodies due to unsafe conditions. Accessing frozen natural water bodies puts both the public and municipal first responders at risk. Anyone who falls through the ice could experience hypothermia and death within minutes.
Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local municipal flood response programs and be prepared for flooding due to the elevated risk at this time.
Stay safe
Banks adjacent to local waterways are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep children and pets away from all water bodies.
This message will remain in effect until 4:30pm on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 and will be updated if necessary.
